I was organizing my photos this morning in Photoshop when I came across a trip Dan and I made to Pittsburgh in 2006. This is the snow cone/popcorn stand on the North Side when we lived here from 1992-1997. In the summer we used to ride our bikes up here to play tennis and always get either popcorn or a bag of peanuts. This man has been here forever and it was fun to reminisce and now take Olivia.

You can read about this stand that has been here since 1934, in this link.

We had to ride through a park in front of Allegheny General Hospital to get to this place. I was telling some friends last night that one day we were riding through the park on our way to play tennis when we saw a homeless man sitting on the curb. He looked awful and had green puss running from his eye. He didn’t look good at all and definitely someone you wouldn’t want to get too near. I’m ashamed to say that I rode right past him, but Dan, he stopped. He stopped and got down on this man’s level and asked him if there was anything he could do to help him. The man then told us his whole sad story. I don’t remember many of the details, but suffice to say that this was a man who had a very sad and hard life. So Dan clean his eye and helped him up to walk over to a park bench. We called an ambulance and stayed with him until it came. This was the day that I knew I would marry Dan….so kind hearted and no matter what the situation, I witnessed what kind of man he is. I love the quote about, “When someone shows you their true colors, believe them.” It’s in times like this that one sees what a person is really made of. Love that about him. We often joke around about this situation now, it was in the height of the AIDS scare and I recall for a few weeks afterwards, we were concerned about it, LOL. We both think about “Green-Eyed Paul” often and hope wherever he is, he’s safe.

We also visited the place where we used to live, right on East Ohio Street. We lived in the top floor apartment. The outside looks pretty shady, but the inside of this apartment was really cool. It has a spiral staircase with 30 foot ceilings, that led to a little built in loft with shelves/desk and another room. The deck was really awesome too…overlooking the ‘old’ Pirate stadium. We viewed fireworks almost every night during baseball season.

This is where Dan proposed to me. It was December 1994 and I just returned from visiting my parents in NC. He drove me up to this overlook (it was starting to snow and very beautiful) and dropped to one knee. I loved visiting this place now with our little girl. Many awesome memories of our first city together, Pittsburgh.

And of course, what kind of visit would you have if you didn’t stop by Primanti’s brothers? http://www.primantibros.com/
